DP Has No Working Cooperation With NRM- DP MPs
Ramson
Democratic Party members of Parliament have asked the party president and new NRM recruit Nobert Mao to organize a delegate’s conference to enable them to change party leadership. This came after Hon Mao was appointed as minister for justice and constitutional affairs by President Museveni after he signed a cooperation agreement between DP and NRM and this made party members lose trust in him.
Last week Mao held a thanksgiving party in Gulu which was overwhelmingly attended by NRM members A welcome to NRM letter addressed to Mao by President Museveni was also delivered in which Gen. Museveni congratulated Norbert Mao but also called opposition leaders to unity giving an example of DP and UPC. Gen Museveni noted in his letter that disunity was the cause of the fall of past governments and Uganda can avoid further division by uniting.
DP legislators saw the coordination between the president of NRM and the President of DP as proof enough to confirm that Mao has joined NRM leaving a gap in DP which must be filled. Led by the caucus deputy Richard Lumu, the DP party members stand firm on the point that there is no corporation between DP and NRM asking Mao to set the party free of the bondage he's taking it into. They vowed to do all it takes to see that the party's image is protected even if it means demonstrating on the streets.
The MPs say both, NRM and Democratic Party have been established on different ideologies and therefore cannot be merged or even have a common ground.
The legislators have asked Mao to see that a delegate’s conference meeting is called as soon as possible to have new members take over the leadership of the party.
The DP constitution gives the secretary-general powers to call a delegate’s conference. Its members insist that much as the current Secretary General has sided with NRM, he still is mandated to summon a meeting for the party.
