Justice Forum Party Wants Leaders To Speak Out On Homosexuality

The opposition Justice Forum (JEEMA) political party has urged all leaders, in government, the opposition, faith institutions, and the private sector to speak out against homosexuality.

According to JEEMA, such a message will send a powerful message which will help in checking the vice that appears to be on the increase.

The call was made by JEEMA party leaders during a press conference they held at their party head office offices in Mengo, Kampala.

The media has lately carried several stories with allegations that some devious people are targeting children and youth to recruit them into gay practices.

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba-Mugalu has been at the forefront of condemning homosexual practices, especially in schools.

Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, who is also the JEEMA party president has sponsored and tabled in Parliament a private members bill against homosexuality.

The JEEMA party officials say they are proud of their President for leading the legal fight against homosexuality. They say JEEMA fully supports the bill although they want some changes in its text, especially regarding punishments and sanctions against homosexual practices and those who seek to promote them.
JEEMA dismissed claims that the bill is intended to fight opposition political parties and divert the attention of Ugandans from corruption scandals.

The JEEMA leaders urged the people to ask their leaders to pronounce themselves on the vice and also fight it themselves.

According to JEEMA, there is fear that the government may not support the anti-homosexuality bill for fear of losing donor aid from the West. The party appeals to the government to stand firm as it has done on other laws.

The JEEMA party officials also appealed to Members of Parliament to turn up in large numbers to pass the bill and if they fail, the voters should publish them at the ballot.

The speaker of parliament referred the anti-homosexuality bill to the legal affairs committee for scrutiny.
