Katikkiro Mayiga Roots For Book Writing And Reading Culture

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has commended book writers and asked more people to document their thoughts to wider the frontiers of knowledge and also promote a reading culture.

The Katikkiro advised while officially launching a new book about Buganda culture and tradition written by the head of the "Ngali" (Crested Crane) Clan Omuttaka Maweesano Deus Kyeyune Kukeera at the Buganda King’s Palace in Bulange, Mengo.

Katikkiro Mayiga commended writers such as Deus Kyeyune for promoting and preserving their culture and traditions through book writing as he cautioned against consuming Western knowledge at the expense of African culture.

In an interview with COU Family TV, the author of the book, Maweesano Deus Kyeyune Kukeera spoke about what inspired him to write. He says the book tackles a number of topics covering the dangers of early marriages, domestic violence, among others.  He also spoke about the challenges he encountered in compiling the book.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owekitiibwa Charles Peter Mayiga, who officially launched the book, noted that if the culture and traditions of the African people are put in writing and in our native languages it is difficult to destroy them.

He underscored the danger of consuming the knowledge in books written by foreigners because they promote those foreign cultures that will ultimately erode and destroy the African culture.

The Katikkiro therefore urged Africans to embrace the culture of reading and writing in addition to the widely popular oral history in African settings.
