Parliament To Investigate Threats Against Selected Lawmakers
Members of Parliament who have received any threatening messages should report to the Sergeant-at-Arms and the Police, to enable investigations.
This came after Tororo District Woman MP, Sarah Opendi Achieng claimed that a group of people had sent her threatening messages and given her an ultimatum to pay 10 million shillings in seven days and if not, they would take unspecified action.
A number of MPs, including Mityana District Woman MP Joyce Bagala Ntwatwa, have received similar threats.
Tension and fear have gripped several Members of Parliament after they received threats in many formats, including death threats, from a group that identifies itself as Tired Men in Uniform. The Police say if indeed those threatening legislators are uniformed officers, they will be punished.
Some of the MPs who have received the threats include Sarah Opendi Achieng, Allan Mayanja, Aloysius Mukasa, Louis Mbwatekamwa Gaffa, and Joyce Bagala Ntwatwa, among others.
Tororo District Woman MP Sarah Opendi said that the first warning was sent to her via official parliamentary email before subsequent messages were sent to her mobile phone.
According to Opendi, the anonymous people directed her to send 10 million shillings to a phone number they provided. They then warned that should she fail, they will take action they did not specify against her and her family.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, said some of these threats could be originating from unscrupulous people in some departments of Government that Parliament is investigating. He urged all the MPs who have received the threats to report to the Sergeant-At-Arms for action to be taken.
The originators of the threats who describe themselves as the tired men in uniform, accuse the legislators of failing to handle the matter of the increment of their salaries with the urgency it deserves. However, some legislators feel that the guns have been pointed at the wrong people while others believe it could be a diversion of something bigger that could happen soon.
It’s not the first time members of parliament and members of the public have received death threats. It remains to be seen whether police will investigate the matter and have the culprits apprehended and brought to book.
The threats come less than a month after popular controversial vlogger Ibrahim Tusubura Olaxess also known as Jaja Ichuli was shot dead by unknown assailants near his home in Kyanja, Nakawa Division, Kampala.
