Police Raise The Red Flag On Rising Cases Of Gun Violence

The Police have expressed concern over the rising cases of shootings in several parts of the country, with some instances leading to loss of lives and injuries.

Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, who addressed journalists in Kampala attributed the shootings to recklessness. So far, there have been over ten  (10) incident of shooting of individuals and some suicide cases recorded across in just one month.

Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, who addressed journalists at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, said that some of the incidents of shooting resulted from recklessness among the police officers, especially last week.

On Saturday 20th May 2023, police officer shot and injured a drunken female student of Uganda Christian University in a case of mistaken identity thinking that she was a thief intending to break into his house.

Enanga attributed many of the shootings to domestic violence, rage, anger and jealousy which all constitute crime but can be avoided. Enanga described the two incidents in Tororo and Mbarara as unfortunate but happened due to recklessness and disregard for the lives of others.

According to Enanga, although such cases of gun violence may cause panic in the public, there is no need to fear because it is not as a result of organized crime. He gave assurance that the police was working to restore security and calm.

Meanwhile, Enanga has cautioned an anonymous group called ATOU(Association of tired Officers in Uniform) allegedly linked to some people calling themselves “tired police officials” who wrote a letter threatening unspecified action against Parliamentarians if they don’t address their concerns, or else they take matters into their hands.

There have been over 10 cases of gun violence from the time a bodyguard shot and killed his principal, Retired Col. Charles Okello Engola, the State Minister of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations on 02nd May 2023. Some of these include the killing of controversial vlogger Ibrahim Tusubira, popularly known as Jaja Ichuli, the killing of at least three private security guards and the murder of a primary school teacher in Moroto District.
