TVET Boss Calls For Innovation And Creation Of Opportunities
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) creates a system that focuses on relevant skills development for true National development, enhanced productivity, and economic growth.
That is according to Elizabeth Kateme, the acting Commissioner for the acting commissioner in charge of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), in the Ministry of Education and Sports.
She was speaking ahead of this year’s annual TVET exhibition to be held at the Institute of Communication Technology in Nakawa, Kampala.
As is in the development world, education must take a complete paradigm shift from skewed theory-based education and even the subsector delivery arrangement to technical, skills advancement.
Uganda’s effort to transition has however been slow.
Since 2019, the plan to create a business, technical, and vocational education and training system is taking shape.
She says, the TVET system holistically addresses Uganda's skilling challenges and employability gap.
She adds that the system supports the creation of needed employable skills and competencies relevant to the national transformational labour market as opposed to just the acquisition of educational certificates.
In responding to the questions regarding centers of excellence and the new curriculum, however, she said, the government through the education ministry had marked tremendous progress.
The TVET policy accentuates that skills are necessary for work including lifelong learning.
Lifelong learning emphasizes learning how to learn and how to adapt rather than just learning specific occupations.
