Uganda’s January 15 Elections Largely Peaceful, Say AU–COMESA–IGAD and EAC Observers
Regional and continental election observers have praised Uganda for conducting largely peaceful and transparent general elections held on January 15. The AU–COMESA–IGAD Joint Election Observation Mission, led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, commended voters for their patience and calm despite minor technical challenges, including delays at some polling stations due to biometric verification (BVK) machine issues. Jonathan noted that while there were isolated disputes, no formal complaints were raised with the mission, underscoring broad public commitment to the democratic process.
In preliminary remarks, the mission urged the government to avoid suspending internet services during future elections and to consider alternative approaches to address internet-related concerns that may arise during polling.
Separately, the East African Community (EAC) Election Observation Mission described Uganda’s electoral environment as largely peaceful and conducive. Rt. Hon. Ambassador Edda Mukabagwiza, head of the EAC mission, highlighted calm and orderly campaigns and commended the Electoral Commission for its preparation and management. The mission also acknowledged occasional delays in the delivery of voting materials, which caused some voter frustration, but noted that the overall process remained peaceful, with active participation by party and candidate agents at polling stations. The EAC mission also issued recommendations to the Ugandan government aimed at strengthening future electoral processes.
Together, the observers’ assessments reflect a generally positive evaluation of the 2026 Ugandan elections, while offering practical recommendations to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in future polls.
