Use Of Triangular Reflectors Could Reduce Accidents – Traffic Police
A report by the traffic police has indicated that at least 432 accidents occurred between 9-15 July, totalling up to over 177 deaths. 688 people also sustained injuries in a span of two weeks.
Superintendent of Police, Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson, attributed the major cause of accidents to low attention paid while driving on the road.
Kananura also advised Ugandans to employ the use of triangular reflectors whenever their vehicles break down, in order to alert other road users. This, he says will reduce the rampant accidents.
Addressing journalists at police headquarters, in Naguru, Superintendent of Police, Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson noted that police have continued to record excessive cases of road accidents. He said that 77 people were killed and some 364 sustained injuries in road crashes between July, 3 and 9, 2023, and the number went up in the period between July,9 and 15.
Kananura explained that of the deceased, 42 were travelling on motorcycles as either passengers or riders whereas 40 were pedestrians. He pointed out the use of Whatsapp while driving, warning road users to stop this vice since it has emerged as one of the main causes of accidents.
Police also report that on Sunday night, a trailer travelling to DRC from South Sudan rammed into a taxi in Kagadi, killing on the spot 15 people, all occupants of the taxi who were coming from Fort Portal where they had earlier attended a burial. Three people, including the driver and turn man of the trailer sustained injuries.
Kananura advocated for drivers to learn how to use the triangular reflector, saying it could possibly help in reducing road accidents.
Due to the recent road accidents that involved vehicles on the run rumming into stationery vehicles parked by the roadside, The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among recently directed the government to trail all stationary vehicles off highways and other roads to avoid further mistakes. So far the speaker’s call has been picked up with positivity by the government.
